The water has always called to me...
How can I share what I’m feeling with the world?
The water has always called to me. Born in California, moved to Melbourne, Australia when I was seven, then back to Fort Worth Texas before I settled in San Antonio, where I've been based since 2001. Knowing what it’s like to be 15 minutes from the ocean has driven me to keep finding my way back ever since.
I've been making art my entire life - my first art classes on the lake at five, catching bluegills on some found line and old gum after class. After more art classes through high school, I graduated from the UTSA College of Architecture where I leaned on my talents and experience to draw and render my way through. Studying in Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy sharpened that observational eye more, with daily observational sketching and a trip to a new city every week.
At 35, I'm coming from a career in Architecture and construction - having built and remodeled numerous exquisite architectural residences. The observation, precision, and attention to detail that bringing fine architecture to life demands carries directly into my work. Every brush stroke matters, every relationship between elements has to be considered, whether building a house or capturing the way morning light hits a grass flat.
I work primarily in oils, but also dabble in gouache on location when I need to travel light into the back country. Inspiration comes from what I've experienced firsthand - the focus that comes when you're dropping down a rig leg above an unsuspecting red snapper, staying in position at Horace Caldwell pier on an epic 10’ hurricane swell, sight-casting to a single redfish, the way light looks filtered through fifty feet of clear water, or the quiet satisfaction of a morning spent watching the coast wake up.
My four-year-old daughter already loves snorkeling and exploring the ocean's inhabitants. Watching her discover these places reminds me why this work matters - capturing those moments when you realize how much beauty exists in the spaces between action and stillness, in the details that make the whole experience worth remembering. My mission through my artwork is to inspire others to experience the water the way I have, understand it’s importance to all of us on earth, and maybe even take a small step towards not just preserving what is left, but towards leaving things a little better than we found it.
